Atherton Disaster & Recovery Services

Atherton is a small community in San Mateo County known for its rural charm and beautiful estates. Only 7,000 residents reside in this Northern California community, but Atherton residents boast the highest per capita income in US towns of similar size. As a result, Atherton is frequently ranked as the most expensive ZIP code in the states. Northwest of San Jose and south of Redwood City, Atherton is considered a part of the San Francisco Metropolitan Area.
Atherton’s six square miles of land is densely populated with native trees to the area. The small rural community takes great effort to preserve the scenic beauty of its thickly wooded areas. With no industrial land-use base, Atherton is solely residential. The town’s largest feature is the 22-acre Holbrook-Palmer Park, left to the town in 1958 by Ms. Olive Holbrook-Palmer. It features sprawling open spaces, abundant trees, recreational programs and facilities.
Despite its quaint suburban charm, Atherton has been the wealthiest town in America for the past three years. The community draws tech billionaires from Silicon Valley to live or vacation. With an average household income of over $450,000 and impressive estates that sell for millions of dollars, it’s no wonder that several notable tech moguls have resided in Atherton. In fact, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, brokerage magnate Charles Schwab, and tech investors Ben Horowitz and Marc Andreessen all resided in Atherton. Though the town is mostly residential, a short drive to Menlo Park brings visitors to fine-dining restaurants, parks, shopping, and museums.
