San Mateo’s downtown features over 800 shops and restaurants, many of them in late 19th and early 20th century historic buildings. This area has been historically influential for the Japanese-American community, and contains many Japanese restaurants and shops. Downtown San Mateo also contains Central Park, the city’s signature park with a recreation center, miniature train, Japanese tea garden, rose garden, and baseball fields.
The city of San Mateo invests in its community by hosting special events and financing art installations throughout the year. The Art in Public Places ordinance has brought art into the community including murals, sculptures, and several modern developer installations that can be viewed all over the city. Special community-building events include Eggstravaganza, the Central Park Music Series, the Holiday Festival of Dance, and the National Night Out.
