Flood Remediation and the Importance of Dehumidification

The aftermath of a flood can bring on a set of challenges, including the destruction of walls and
floors. Water damage can also set off a trail of destruction, as flooding also creates an ideal
environment for contaminants to breed. Flood water often contains harmful bacteria such as E-
Coli, Salmonella, Hepatitis A, Coliforms etc., as well as mold spores. The longer flood water
stays in place, the more dangerous it becomes for you.
Therefore, flood remediation is vital for not only removing standing flood water if your property
becomes damaged but also making sure the space is made safe again. Flood remediation includes
eliminating excess humidity by dehumidifying your property post-flooding and ensuring there is
no potential for mold growth.

Dehumidification

Dehumidification is a process in which humidity levels are reduced. There are dehumidifiers that
can be placed inside a room or attached to an AC unit that will help eliminate excess moisture
from the air. There are two main types of dehumidifiers: active dehumidifiers and passive
dehumidifiers. Active dehumidifiers require water drainage systems for it to work, whereas
passive dehumidifiers only need ventilation with no connection to plumbing or AC units.
To begin the dehumidifying process, cold air is drawn into the dehumidifier and sent across a
cold coil. The dew point of the air will be lowered as it becomes saturated with water, causing
condensation to occur on the dew point coils. Warm air then flows into the dehumidifier and
collects the water droplets. Finally, dehumidified air with lower humidity levels is released back
into the space.

The Benefits of Dehumidification

The dehumidification process eliminates excess moisture from the property and prevents mold
and mildew growth. In addition, it lowers humidity levels in general by extracting excess
moisture in hot summer months. Dehumidifiers also help increase cooling efficiency in summer
months by dehumidifying the air which helps your AC work more efficiently. Furthermore,
dehumidifiers also reduce static electricity and keep you healthier.
Dehumidification can also help lower monthly energy bills because dehumidified air with lower
humidity levels means that you will use less cooling power to cool down the dehumidified air.
This will help in lowering your overall monthly usage of electric for cooling purposes such as
using an AC. Dehumidifiers also provide similar benefits in winter months when humidity is
high inside your space so you won't have to turn up the heat as much but still stay comfortable.
