Sunnyvale is a city in the Santa Clara Valley just south of the San Francisco Peninsula, bordered by Mountainview and Cupertino. The San Jose Mountains parallel the city’s south parameter, and the city is surrounded on all sides by the California Bay Area. Nearly 152,770 residents reside in Sunnyvale’s 22.78 square miles of tree-lined residential streets. The city, lying along the historic El Camino Real, is famously known as the birthplace of the video game industry. As one of the major cities forming the major technology area known as Silicon Valley, Sunnyvale is the former location of Atari headquarters and currently houses many major technology companies. Apple, LinkedIn, Walmart labs, and 23andMe are all headquartered here, and Google has announced further development plans in the Moffett Park area of Sunnyvale.

The city of Sunnyvale offers a Mediterranean climate typical of the Bay Area, with hot summers and mild, rainy winters. The city takes pride in its community development and resources, which has led to a requirement for public art components for all private development projects – in fact, Sunnyvale was one of the first Bay Area cities to do so. Sunnyvale, with over 150 public art pieces throughout the city to date, has one of the largest public art collections in Northern California. It is also one of the few U.S. cities with a single unified Department of Public Safety, where all personnel are trained as EMTs, firefighters, and police officers.
